چکیده

The recently detected linear polarization in the optical lightcurve of GRB 990510 renewed the interest on how polarization can be produced in gamma–ray burst fireballs. Here we present a model based on the assumption that we are seeing a collimated fireball, observed slightly off–axis. This introduces some degree of anisotropy, and makes it possible to observe a linearly polarized flux even if the magnetic field is completely tangled in the plane orthogonal to the line of sight. We construct the lightcurve of the polarization flux, showing that it is always characterized by two maxima, with the polarization position angle changing by 90◦ between the first and the second maximum. The very same geometry here assumed implies that the total flux initially decays in time as a power law, but gradually steepens as the bulk Lorentz factor of the fireball decreases.

The Polarization Variability in the Optical Afterglow of GRB 990712

In a recent paper, Rol and colleagues present evidence for a variable polarization in the optical afterglow following the gamma-ray burst GRB 990712. The variation is highly significant, but the position angle appears time independent. Contrary to their conclusion, we point out that this can in fact be explained with existing afterglow models, namely that of a laterally expanding jet. Subject h...

The Dynamics and Light Curves of Beamed Gamma Ray Burst Afterglows

The energy requirements of gamma ray bursts have in past been poorly constrained because of three major uncertainties: The distances to bursts, the degree of burst beaming, and the efficiency of gamma ray production. The first of these has been resolved, with both indirect evidence (the distribution of bursts in flux and position) and direct evidence (redshifted absorption features in the after...

Polarimetric constraints on the optical afterglow emission from GRB 990123

Polarization of the optical emission from GRB 990123 was measured on 24.17 January 1999 universal time with the Nordic Optical Telescope. An upper limit of 2.3% on the linear polarization was found. Accurate polarization measurements provide important clues to the blast wave geometry and magnetic field structure of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The lack of detectable polarization for GRB 990123 indi...

Relativistic Effects and Polarization in Three High-Energy Pulsar Models

We present the influence of the special relativistic effects of aberration and light travel time delay on pulsar high-energy lightcurves and polarization characteristics predicted by three models: the two-pole caustic model, the outer gap model, and the polar cap model. Position angle curves and degree of polarization are calculated for the models and compared with the optical data on the Crab ...

Rapid fading of optical afterglows as evidence for beaming in gamma-ray bursts

Based on the refined dynamical model proposed by us earlier for beamed γ-ray burst ejecta, we carry out detailed numerical procedure to study those γray bursts with rapidly fading afterglows (i.e., ∼ t). It is found that optical afterglows from GRB 970228, 980326, 980519, 990123, 990510 and 991208 can be satisfactorily fitted if the γ-ray burst ejecta are highly collimated, with a universal ini...
